Temporary to Permanent Hiring Strategy - How it works?

Temp-to-Perm (Temporary-to-Permanent) is a hiring strategy where an employee starts as a temporary worker with the potential to become a permanent employee after a set period. This model benefits both employers and candidates by allowing a trial period before committing to a full-time role.

How It Works in Recruitment?

  1. Client Requests a Temp-to-Perm Hire

    • A company approaches a recruitment agency needing a worker for a temporary period, typically 3-6 months, with the option to hire permanently.

  2. Recruitment Agency Sources Candidates

    • The agency finds and screens candidates who are open to temp-to-perm opportunities.

  3. Candidate Works as a Temporary Employee

    • The selected candidate is employed by the recruitment agency (or an umbrella company) and is paid by them.

    • The candidate works at the client’s company under their supervision.

  4. Performance Evaluation Period

    • During the temp period, the employer assesses the candidate’s skills, cultural fit, and performance before deciding on a permanent offer.

  5. Conversion to Permanent Employment

    • If both parties are satisfied, the client hires the candidate directly.

    • A transfer fee (or reduced placement fee) is usually paid to the agency based on the candidate’s annual salary.

  6. Alternative Outcomes

    • If the candidate is not a good fit, the company can let them go at the end of the temp contract with no long-term commitment.

    • Some contracts include a buyout fee if the client wants to hire the temp before the agreed-upon period ends

Why Employers Use Temp-to-Perm Hiring?
  • Reduces hiring risk – They can evaluate the worker before making a permanent offer.

  • Faster hiring process – Temp workers can start immediately.

  • Flexibility – If budgets or needs change, the employer is not locked into a permanent hire.

Why Candidates Like Temp-to-Perm Roles?
  • Opportunity to prove themselves and secure a permanent job.

  • Gain experience and try out the company before committing.

  • Continued income while searching for a long-term role.
